Evaluating 83 PSD to HTML Vendors

July 25th, 2008

I’ve decided to put my previous post - Tips on choosing a PSD to HTML vendor into action.

Important Notes:

  • Observations and data are based on vendor’s website and existing samples (I’m assuming these are their selling points)
  • Data was gathered between July 23-25, 2008
  • List is in alphabetical order
  • W3C Markup Validation Service was used for validating xhtml file
  • W3C CSS Validation Service was used for validating CSS
  • Text + - Does the layout break when text size is increased?
  • IE6 - Is the site compatible with IE6? This includes PNG support and any obvious differences (e.g spacing)
  • Font - Is font-sizing relative?
  • Print - Is there a print stylesheet present?
  • Price - Prices are based on vendor’s starting prices and not the final price. I picked the cheapest one available.
  • If there’s any error, feel free to correct me

Can anyone please humor me with answers to the following questions:

  1. c-coding.com - What’s the frameset for?
  2. cssjob.com - Am I the only one who thinks this site resembles CSS Beauty?
  3. htmlblender.com and psdslicer.com- What’s the logic behind offering table-based layouts?
  4. htmlslice.com - Table-based???
  5. psd2xhtmlcoding.com - Marquee??

Unfortunately, only two vendors had what I initially looked for - Frontenders and YummyCSS.

I’m posting in some rough observations regarding the vendors. I have included those who only missed in one part.

Frontenders
Frontenders does produce clean xhtml and css code. And the affordable price is quite tempting. But the number of bad reviews really makes me think twice.
YummyCSS
I’m impressed with the usability of the site especially the order form. Xhtml and css codes are very well written (even in their samples!). The only thing I’d want to see more of are reviews from past clients but given that they only launched, I won’t hesitate giving them a shot.
Code Press
A very simple website with an impressive client base. Having BBC as a client definitely says a lot about the quality of their work. Unfortunately, the budget may seem to be more than what I can afford.
csssage.com
It is certainly good that the vendor provides an address and a phone number but the lack of information on the site doesn’t convince me well enough to take time to contact them.
CSS Rockstars
Design is good and I’ve seen their site in various css galleries. Code is well written too not to mention a fast turnaround time at a great price. A big problem for me though is their inability to make the layout flexible enough to handle text-size increases (and most probably more content) and this problem is consistent even in their sample work.
Djaxo
There are quite a few things I don’t like with the way they code. First the use of too many &nbsps , all headers are declared using <h1>, and they don’t use image replacement techniques where I find them necessary. And why write the CSS code in just one line?
Finely Sliced
I have no problem with their coding but similar to csssage, the website doesn’t provide much information regarding their xhtml/css coding services.
PSD2HTML
PSD2HTML is certainly one of the popular ones and they’ve been around since 2005.
I won’t doubt the quality of the work but the 8 hour turnaround time is quite deceiving. I want to know my exact turnaround time. I also don’t like the fact that they have too many paid reviews going around.
PSD2Website
I like how they use css sprites but then I don’t see the point in making the whole navigation image based when the font they used looks like it’s just Arial. I also fail to see any client testimonials and their website confuses me.
XHTML Slice
The quality of their code is just uhm bad. The site doesn’t degrade gracefully when styling is off, they don’t make use of image replacements, uses too many &nbsps and fails to use an unordered list for coding their navigation.
XHTMLMagic
I just don’t like vendors overpromising fast turnaround times because I’d hate to be disappointed towards the end. Nonetheless, the price and code quality is great.
xHTML master
Unbeatable price and turnaround time. Very similar slogan (You design, we XHTML in 8 hours) used by PSD2HTML. Other than that, coding-wise, I’d give them a chance.
XHTML Now
Code is great but the lack of samples and client testimonials doesn’t appeal to me. And the need to ask them for a quote plus the lack of faster turnaround time might be a problem for me.
XHTMLized
Xhtmlized has a very impressive list of clients and their code looks awesome. Rates may be too expensive for most.
XHTMLizers
I love the design and the whole concept. Quality is great as well. I just hope I could see more testimonials.

Even if the coding quality is great, nothing beats support. If I have any clarifications or revisions, it would matter a lot to me how long they’ll respond to a request. They may be saying that the code will be done in 4-24 hours but if it’s a buggy code, the whole project can stretch up to a week because of the emailing back and forth (not to mention the timezone differences).

I’m very interested in feedbacks from other people. I don’t have the budget to actually try out these vendors but I hope someone could properly evaluate them fully.

    Hi,

Can you please review and add my site to your list ?

    url - http://xhtmlmydesign.com

    Thanks,
    Ann

  2. Daniel (August.3.2008):

Just to say that we worked with cssjob.com for our outsourcing needs and extended XHTML coding and we are still in business with these guys especially Nick who is our go to guy when we need xhtml pages and when we need a lot of them. Best of all, you can always get a custom price. Sometimes we get pages for less than $40 which is very cheap.

This is one awesome list of reviews, I will probably contact some of the providers to check custom quotes but for now I can recommend you cssjob

    Best Regards
    Daniel

  3. coder (August.4.2008):

Thanks for the feedback Daniel. With cssjob though, the one major turn off would be their design which looks like a rip of cssbeauty. Code could be better too.

Try checking out YummyCSS’ Promo they’re offering their services half off, seen it advertised in one of the showcase sites.

  4. Daniel (August.4.2008):

    Regards Coder,

Thanks for your input regarding YummyCSS but they have turnaround time from 1 day to 3 days, and only affordable price is on promotion, regular price for 1 day is $350 which is way to high. We usually (in 90% of cases) we get our pages sliced in less than 10 hours from cssjob and thats why we love them. One we had a project that needed to pages coded on Sunday, it was some mess on designer side, so we needed code sliced for 3 pages on Sunday and we just contacted cssjob on msn and it was done in around 12 hours.
Yea I see that site header looks similar to the cssbeaty but then again only header colors but then gain we are not hiring them for unique design jobs we hire them for programming and xhtml ;)

btw promo on Yummy looks good I man try it so we will see how good they are and will they keep that price, otherwise it is way to expensive.

    Best Regards
    Daniel

  5. Daniel (August.4.2008):

LOL that was one bad witting on my side :)
Thats what happens when you write fast and do not check what you wrote :)

  6. K (August.5.2008):

I’m like you, I also prefer long term clients to short term, save me time and money for communication and advertisement.

There are a few things you overlooked here ( and Yummy doesn’t have the best code/price ) but this is still the most throughout list I’ve seen so far.

Should have included the “CSS on / Image off” test (sites use negative text-indent for image replacement will fail, hard), and a few deeper tests that I think perhaps none of these services can pass. But that would kind of defeat the purpose of evaluating them anyway. ;)

btw I’m one of those old school developers, still love to code for legacy browsers like IE 5.0, 5.5, and maybe a little obsessed with code optimization… :)

  7. Adrian Clark (August.8.2008):

Another very realiable PSD to XHTML service:

You send a design in any of common formats (PSD, PNG, JPG, GIF etc)
and you receive a high-quality XHTML-CSS page.

    http://www.mydesign2html.co.uk

  8. Indranil (August.9.2008):

LOL! Seems like my site did the worst of the lot! :P
Anyway, glad to see someone finally checking this. And thanks for giving me enough motivation to do something about it :P
I now hope you do update it, hehe :)

  9. Gustav Ceratt (August.10.2008):

    Hi,

    Probably the most reliable service

Your Design to HTML in 24 hours

You send a design in any of common formats (PSD, PNG, JPG, GIF etc)
and you receive a high-quality XHTML-CSS page.

Get custom hand-coded professional HTML / XHTML in 24 hours.

  10. Jicker (August.10.2008):

A good list with the best xhtml slicers you can find on our site - http://htmlslicers.info

  11. coder (August.10.2008):

Indranil, thanks for being a sport about it. I hope everyone else would react the same way you did. I’d be sure to update the list soon once I have the time.

Adrian Clark and Gustav Ceratt, do you own these two companies? What’s your real name? You’re using the same IP and yet you have two different names. I’m guessing you own both these slicing services?

Jicker, I can’t believe xhtmlized was the worst. How were you able to derive the scores? Did you even consider the bad feedbacks for instantcoding? Xhtmlized’s code quality is far better than instantcoding.

  12. K (August.11.2008):

Yep, I’d like to know that too. Xhtmlized is one of the two oldest firms in the field.

    “PSD Chopstick - Rating [ 7/10 ]”

Hmm… from what I know this service is running by a 14 year-old, that could be an explanation for the bad feedback(s) on mostsliced… or maybe not.

  13. Adrian Clark (August.18.2008):

    Hi Coder,

Two different person working in my company post this messages that’s why, one was Gustav. And we decide to use a more SEO friendly domain name that’s why now is mypsdtohtml.

Hope you give a try in our services!

  14. psd to html (August.19.2008):

Feel free to add our service to the list as well:

    http://convertpsd2html.com
    price: $125
    turnaround: 2 days
    subpages: 50% discount

    Thank you

  15. ilker yoldas (September.7.2008):

Due to my work load I will not be able to code the sites I design any more. It will also allow me to do what I do best, that is graphic design. This list sure came in handy and I’m going to give XHTMLmaster a shot. Will provide feedback when the work is over.

I was wondering if you are going to update this list with the new ones people left to comment and perhaps the following as well:

Would be great if you could add another column for price of additional pages. I’ve bookmarked this page and if I find that it’s updated, I will promote it around the web like crazy! =)

  16. ilker yoldas (September.10.2008):

We gave xHTMLmaster a shot and with our first project results in, I have to say — we are absolutely amazed! Excellent work with an excellent turnaround time.. not to mention the excellent price!

Will work with them again. A+++++

    =)

  17. coder (September.12.2008):

    @ilker yoldas
I’ll definitely update this page soon. Thanks for providing a list of the new ones.

  20. Alok Jain (September.27.2008):

    Hi

Thanks for spending the time, and pointing out the things missing in the sites.

We will add the missing functionality to our site within a day or two (as soon as we get some free time).

    Thanks,

  21. jrklein (October.2.2008):

Thanks to coder for your work compiling info for all of these vendors! Very helpful.

After reviewing your site and several others, we tried XHTMLizers.com last week and they were great. Submitted the job with several requirements and optional requests on 08/24 11pm CST. One of their staff responded asking for clarifications on 08/25 6am CST. We emailed back and forth 3-4 times and they began work sometime after 08/25 10am CST. They sent the chopped/sliced XHTML/CSS/JS code on 08/26 5pm CST. In my case, that was 30 hours before their 72 hour deadline! Nice. The early delivery was probably a result of fairly simple layouts and our ability to provide thorough documentation of what we were expecting when I submitted the project.

Everything looked great and validated fine for me (XHTML 1.0 Strict, CSS 2.1) and no changes were required. Very impressed! Will send jobs to them again!

  22. Markup Service (October.2.2008):

Markup Service provides hand-coded conversion of designs into high quality, W3C valid, tableless XHTML/CSS.

    The prices start at $139.
Delivery time – less than 8 hours per page.
Each secondary page is discounted by 50%.
